Travelling Between Kalbarri, Geraldton, and Mullewa
The trip can be done in any direction, but many travellers begin in Geraldton before heading north to Kalbarri and looping inland to Mullewa. From Geraldton to Kalbarri is about 155 kilometres, just under a two-hour drive. The coastal route offers plenty of pull-over spots to stretch your legs, including the unmissable Pink Lake.
Between Kalbarri and Mullewa is a longer inland drive of about 220 kilometres, taking approximately 2.5 hours. This leg takes you through changing landscapes, from the rugged coast to wide inland plains, and in wildflower season, the roadsides themselves become part of the attraction.
Mullewa back to Geraldton is a shorter drive of 100 kilometres, making it easy to complete the loop or continue your journey south towards Perth. If you’re interested in more journeys in the area, have a look at our Epic Perth to Kalbarri Road Trip Itinerary.

Geraldton: A Maritime Hub
Beginning your journey in Geraldton provides you with a prime introduction to the region. Geraldton is the coastal hub of the Mid West, with a lively melange of history, culture, and outdoor activity. It’s perhaps best known for its HMAS Sydney II Memorial, which offers both a moving tribute to one of Australia’s most tragic naval incidents as well as panoramic views over the town and coastline. The striking Point Moore Lighthouse, with its red-and-white bands, is another must-see, especially for photography lovers.
Nature isn’t far away either. Chapman River Regional Park offers a network of trails where you can spot kangaroos, birdlife, and more than 300 species of native plants — an excellent prelude to the wildflower displays inland. The Geraldton Foreshore is perfect for a sunset stroll, and the town’s cafes and seafood restaurants make it a great base for exploring the Mid West.

Kalbarri: A Breathtaking Natural Landscape
Continuing on up the coast from Geraldton, you’ll arrive at the jewel in Kalbarri’s crown — the Kalbarri National Park. It’s a showstopper in any season, with the mighty Murchison River Gorge cutting through rugged red sandstone cliffs. The Kalbarri Skywalk offers jaw-dropping views from two cantilevered platforms and is undoubtedly a major highlight of the park. Further inland, the iconic Nature’s Window frames the gorge perfectly.
The gorges are complemented by the coastal cliffs stretching south of town, where walks like the Bigurda Trail reveal dramatic rock formations such as Island Rock and Natural Bridge. During wildflower season, over 800 species bloom, including orchids, grevilleas, and the distinctive Kalbarri spider orchid.Kalbarri town itself makes a comfortable base from which to explore, with beaches, riverside activities, and plenty of dining options. Mullewa: The Heart of Wildflower Country
Bringing your road trip to a close, enter the heart of wildflower country, Mullewa. From late July to early September, the surrounding countryside bursts with vivid carpets of everlastings, while the rare and beautiful wreath flower draws visitors from across the world. The Mullewa Wildflower Walk is a popular 2.7-kilometre loop trail right in town, showcasing seasonal blooms with interpretive signs along the way.
But beyond wildflower season, the area’s trails offer a unique immersion into the region’s heritage. For a deeper connection to local history, the Monsignor John Hawes Heritage Trail highlights the work of the priest-architect who designed many of Western Australia’s churches, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape.
Mullewa is also located near another wildflower hotspot, the town of Mingenew. Just an hour’s drive away, you can add Mingenew to your road trip for additional sightseeing. Alternatively, join our multi-day Mid West Australia Wildflower Tour for a tour of the region where you don’t have to drive!
