Family Fun: Kid-Friendly Activities in Kalbarri and Beyond

No matter where you travel, keeping the kids entertained makes all the difference to your family vacation. There’s no fun to be had when kids are bored by all the adult activities. But luckily, Kalbarri and its surrounding towns make the perfect setting for a family outing, with everything from outdoor activities to wildlife encounters on the cards.

At D’Guy Journeys, we know this corner of Western Australia like the back of our hand, not only as locals but through our range of Kalbarri Trips. We’ve created this guide to kid-friendly activities in Kalbarri and beyond so you can have an unforgettable trip with the family. Have an Adventure in Kalbarri National Park

Spanning 186,000 hectares, Kalbarri National Park is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Both kids and adults will have endless fun here as you explore attractions like the Kalbarri Skywalk, hike along the trails, or even go abseiling down the cliffs.

There are a number of viewpoints to admire in the park, including Nature’s Window, a naturally formed frame in the landscape, and Z-Bend Lookout, where you can admire how the Murchison River has carved its path. Both of these are accessible on a short walk, but you can explore further on longer trails that range in difficulty. Check out our guide to the 10 Best Hikes and Trails in Kalbarri National Park to find the best one for your family’s abilities!

In the park, you won’t want to miss the Kalbarri Skywalk. Extending out over the river, kids will be thrilled walking on the skywalk, where you can peek through the metal down to the gorge. If you’re looking for some adrenaline-pumping experiences, you can even go abseiling down the Z-Bend Gorge! This activity is suitable for kids ages six and above. After your descent, you can cool down with a swim in the river waters.

Feed the Local Pelicans in Kalbarri

One of the more unusual attractions in Kalbarri is a group of pelicans who have been fed by locals for years. What started as one man’s efforts has turned into a daily tradition, where volunteers feed the pelicans at 8:45 am. Visitors can watch the feeding and learn more about the birds from the volunteers. Better yet, young kids can even get the opportunity to feed the pelicans themselves!

This is a free experience, but volunteers do request a small donation for their efforts. Check out our guide to more Free Things to Do in Kalbarri As Recommended by Locals!

Canoe Down the Murchison River

For an immersive and invigorating experience, take a canoe down the Murchison River for a safari on the water! With Kalbarri Boat Hire, you’ll paddle past intriguing rock formations, spot wildlife, and soak up the stunning scenery. You can also choose a kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or pedal boat instead of a canoe. For a more relaxed cruise, set sail on a powerboat where even your dogs can join!

Discover the Awesome Pink Lake

Just one-hour’s drive from Kalbarri, you’ll come across a phenomenon that has to be seen to be believed — the Pink Lake! With its bright bubblegum hues, the Pink Lake is a sight to behold and to be captured. These waters got their colour thanks to algae that lives in the lake and kids (and adults) will be absolutely awed by the sight! While you can’t swim in the lake, you can have plenty of fun taking photos and exploring the surroundings.

You can learn more about this natural wonder and more like it with our guide to Western Australia’s Incredible Pink Lakes.

Explore the Museum of Geraldton

An outing to the museum may not sound like the most thrilling activity for kids, but you’ll have to make an exception for the Museum of Geraldton. Located in the coastal town of Geraldton just under two hours from Kalbarri, this museum will certainly entertain and educate the kids with its exhibitions featuring everything from fossils to artefacts from shipwrecks! This is the perfect outing for a day with bad weather.

Meet the Animals at Greenough Wildlife Park

For a close encounter with native animals, head to the Greenough Wildlife Park! Home to kangaroos, crocodiles, emus, dingos, and more, kids can learn more about Australia’s wildlife at the park. They can also enjoy some more hands-on activities, from handling reptiles to meeting birds and walking ferrets. The Greenough Wildlife Park also hosts a special wildlife trainee day for kids between the ages of six and 12, where they get to interact with over 20 species in one day!
