Guide to Nature’s Window Walk Trail, Kalbarri National Park

In Kalbarri National Park, one of the most beautiful locations is Nature’s Window. This naturally formed window in the rock creates an almost picture-perfect view over the Murchison River. While the trail to it from the car park is short and enjoyable, there is also a longer path, known as the Loop Trail, which takes you along the Murchison River for an unparalleled experience.

At D’Guy Journeys, Kalbarri National Park and Nature’s Window are highlights of our Kalbarri Trips. We’ve created this guide to the Nature’s Window Walk Trail in Kalbarri National Park for a thorough overview of what you can expect. Let’s get walking!

What is the Nature’s Window Walk Trail?

The Nature’s Window Walk Trail is the main path leading to the formation from the Nature’s Window parking lot. It is about an 800-metre roundtrip and includes a staircase. It’s classified as Class 3, given its more rugged terrain, and takes about 30-45 minutes to complete the return.

Once you reach Nature’s Window, you have the option to continue walking along the Loop Trail. This trail is 9 kilometres in total, taking about 3-5 hours to complete in total. It follows the path of the Murchison River, which has carved a natural loop shape. The Loop Trail is much more strenuous and is classified as a Class 4 trail, as you’ll encounter steep and rough sections and walk along cliff edges. While a good level of fitness is required, the effort is well worth it for the incredible scenery.

When is the Best Time to Do Nature’s Window Walk Trail?

The best time to do the Nature’s Window Walk Trail and the Loop Trail is between May and October when temperatures average between the low to mid-20s. While it is possible to hike during the summer months, be warned that temperatures can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius in the gorge! Because of this, the Loop Trail is closed to visitors from 7 am from November to March. But no matter which season you visit, it’s always recommended to start the trail early to avoid the heat.

What Will You See on Nature’s Window Walk Trail?

The highlight of the Nature’s Window Walk Trail and the Loop Trail is, of course, Nature’s Window. This spectacular formation was created by wind erosion, framing the Murchison River. In the area and along the loop, you can admire the incredible rock layers as well as fossilised burrows, evidence of ancient worms!

Along the trails, particularly between July and October, you’ll be able to spot blooming wildflowers, including daisies and orchids. If you’re lucky, you may even come across black flanked rock wallabies or some kangaroos! Over 100 bird species have been recorded in the area, so don’t forget to keep your eye on the sky too.

Tips for the Nature’s Window Walk Trail

When embarking on either the Nature’s Window Walk Trail or the Loop Trail, there are a few important things to keep in mind:

  • Wear sturdy walking shoes, as both trails involve rough terrain.
  • These trails are exposed to the sun, so ensure you wear a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for protection.
  • Make sure to bring plenty of water, approximately 1 litre for every hour. If you are completing the Loop Trail, pack between 3-4 litres of water. This is essential as there is no drinking water in the park.
