Your Guide to Kalbarri Skywalk

Opened in 2020, the Kalbarri Skywalk in Western Australia has fast become the most exciting attraction in the area. This skywalk consists of not one, but two lookouts which extend 100 metres over the edge of the Murchison River gorge. You’ll feel as though you’re floating mid-air, suspended in the breathtaking landscape.

We believe the Skywalk should be at the top of your list of things to do in Kalbarri, so we’ve created this Kalbarri Skywalk guide to help you plan your travels. If you’re feeling inspired to experience more of Western Australia, then have a look at our Kalbarri Day Trips.

How to Get to Kalbarri Skywalk, Western Australia

Located within the Kalbarri National Park, the Kalbarri Skywalk is just a 40-45 minute drive from the centre of Kalbarri Town, making it ideal for a short day trip. There are two entrances to the national park along the Ajana-Kalbarri Road, the first of which will take you to the skywalk. Travelling directly from town, the first entrance is on the left, opposite Kalbarri airport. From the entrance, the Kalbarri Skywalk is located another 38 kilometres away.

At the entrance, you’ll have to pay the standard entrance fee if you travel in a vehicle. At the time of writing, the fee is $17 per standard vehicle ($10 for concessions). For a motorbike, it’s $10 per person. For larger vehicles with 12 or more occupants, it’s $8 per person ($3.50 per person for concessions). Make sure to check the Western Australia Parks website for the most up-to-date information. When you join any of our tours to Kalbarri National Park, entrance fees are included.

Many people choose to visit Kalbarri from Perth, which involves a six-hour drive. We recommend breaking up the drive into a longer trip so you can visit attractions along the Coral Coast, such as the incredible Pink Lake! If you’d prefer to avoid a long drive, it’s also possible to fly from Perth to Geraldton and then embark on the shorter two-hour drive to Kalbarri.

Visitor Details for Kalbarri Skywalk

The Skywalk is located on the pre-existing West Loop visitor site in Kalbarri National Park, with a nearby parking lot offering ample space for cars and tour coaches. There is also designated parking for visitors with mobility needs.

One of the best things about Kalbarri Skywalk is how accessible it is. The Skywalk is located close to the parking lot, with flat paths leading directly to it. The Skywalk itself is flat and wheelchair accessible, meaning the whole family can enjoy an excursion here.

Amenities at the Skywalk include accessible bathrooms, a kiosk, interpretative signage, and shade shelters to protect you from the sun. There is also the Skywalk Cafe where you can purchase light food, drinks, and snacks.

Some important things to note before your Kalbarri Skywalk visit is that there is no drinking water available in the park. You will need to bring your own or purchase some from the cafe, especially in the scorching summer months. There are also no rubbish bins located within the park, so you are advised to keep the park clean by taking any rubbish with you.

What You Can Expect to See At Kalbarri Skywalk

At Kalbarri Skywalk, you can explore two spectacular vantage points suspended 100 metres above ground. The one extends 25 metres out (longer than the Grand Canyon Skywalk!) while the other extends out 17 metres. The platforms have metal mesh flooring, allowing you to walk safely across while peering down below — you can even see the river flowing beneath your feet!

These walkways offer an incredibly immersive experience of nature. Above the Murchison River, you’ll be able to admire how this sandstone gorge formed over millions of years and photograph the rugged scenery. You’ll also be able to learn more about the Nanda Aboriginal people, with a number of Indigenous artworks dotted around the attraction. Take your time to read the signage set up here, giving you further insight into the history of the region, the local culture, and flora and fauna.

Speaking of fauna, you may be able to enjoy a spot of wildlife watching from the skywalk. Emus are commonly seen in the area, while kangaroos and wallaroos have also been sighted. Birds soar in abundance here, including the nankeen kestrel, Australian ringneck, and singing honeyeater. Make sure to bring binoculars for optimal viewing!

If you work up an appetite, the Aboriginal-owned Kalbarri Skywalk Cafe serves a range of food options, such as paninis, wraps, and toasted sandwiches. You can also enjoy a slice of cake and a cup of coffee while admiring the stunning views.

Best Time to Visit the Kalbarri National Park Skywalk

Kalbarri Skywalk is open year-round no matter the weather. In the summer months between December and February, you can experience bright sunny days and intense heat with temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius, so make sure you come prepared with water and sun protection.

Autumn, from March to May, and spring, from September to November, offer a good transition period. But the winter months, from June to August, offer the best weather for exploring, with cool temperatures easing any outdoor activities.

An especially notable time to visit is during the epic wildflower season! Lasting from August to September, you’ll see the landscape burst to life with a diversity of blooms such as broom milkworts and drosera macrantha.

If you want truly awe-inspiring views, plan your visit around sunrise or sunset and watch the rays illuminate the Skywalk. Make sure to pack your camera!

Stargazing at Kalbarri Skywalk

After the sun sets, you can experience a whole different side of Kalbarri Skywalk with some of the best stargazing in the region. With no light pollution around, you’ll be awed as the Milky Way emerges in its full glory.

The best way to experience this is on a guided tour, especially so you can leave the night driving to someone else, as there is active wildlife in the park. D’Guy Journeys is proud to be the only local tour operator licensed to conduct stargazing at the Kalbarri National Park. We offer a Kalbarri Skywalk Sundowner and Stargazing Tour as well as a Kalbarri Stargazing Tour, giving you access to professional telescopes for optimal stargazing. During the tour, we also provide tips on how to photograph the night sky with your smartphone.

Things to Do in Kalbarri National Park

Of course, you’ll want to make the most of your time in Kalbarri National Park along with your Skywalk experience. This incredible reserve spans 186,000 hectares, beckoning to adventurers. One of the must-see sights in Kalbarri National Park, which is close to the Skywalk, is Nature’s Window. This natural rock formation perfectly frames the Murchison River and is just a 500-metre walk away from the nearest car park.

Another popular vantage point is the Z Bend Lookout. This lookout is located at a sharp bend in the Murchison River, giving a fascinating view of the formation of the river gorge. The lookout is located 600 metres from the car park, but adventurous visitors can take a hike right down to the river for a more immersive experience.

You can see the Kalbarri Skywalk, Nature’s Window, and Z Bend Lookout as part of our Kalbarri Inland and River Gorges Tour, the ultimate way to experience all the best sites in Kalbarri National Park. Within the park, you’ll find even more hiking trails, ranging from short 30-minute walks to longer 4-hour loops. Other popular activities in the park include swimming in the river, abseiling, and picnicking.

Kalbarri National Park continues on the coastline, where you can explore the beautiful Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs. Here you can admire the forces of the ocean and numerous rock formations like the Natural Bridge. Walk along the cliff paths for panoramic vistas. Between June and November, you can even see migrating humpback whales!

Tips for Visiting Kalbarri Skywalk

To help you further prepare for your visit to Kalbarri Skywalk, we’ve created this list of our top tips:

  • Arrive early or late in the day, to avoid peak crowds and get the best light for photos (sunrise and sunset are especially dramatic).
  • Bring plenty of water, as there is no free drinking water in the gorge area. Make sure to bring at least two litres, since Kalbarri can get especially hot.
  • Wear sun protection, including a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, and lightweight long sleeves — the sun is strong year-round.
  • Sturdy footwear is a good idea, even though the paths at the Skywalk are sealed. A good pair of walking shoes helps if you explore adjacent walks like Nature’s Window or Z Bend.
  • Respect the environment, and take out all your trash since there are no rubbish bins at the park.
  • If staying after dark for stargazing, bring a jacket as temperatures drop at night.
  • Download any online maps, beforehand as mobile reception in the park can be limited. Bringing a battery pack is also a good idea for phones and cameras.
