Enjoy stunning views of Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs from the Natural Bridge.
Along the Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs, the Natural Bridge stands out as one of the region’s most spectacular rock formations. Sculpted over millions of years by natural forces, this statuesque monument is a true sight to behold. You can admire the majesty of the Natural Bridge for yourself by driving just over 15 kilometres south of Kalbarri.
We’ve created this guide to Kalbarri’s Natural Bridge to provide more information about this wild wonder. If you’re interested in discovering more outside Kalbarri, then have a look at our Kalbarri Trips.
The Natural Bridge is one of numerous formations along the Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs, all of which were eroded by powerful wind and waves over centuries. In some parts, the cliffs drop 100 meters into the ocean, creating a breathtaking scene. The Natural Bridge is named after the partially eroded limestone still connected to the cliffs, giving the impression of a bridge over the ocean.
The Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs form part of Kalbarri National Park, with other notable formations including Island Rock, Shell House, Eagle Gorge, Pot Alley, and Red Bluff.
The Natural Bridge is located a short drive from Kalbarri Town. You’ll take George Grey Dr for about 10 kilometres and turn right onto National Park South Access Rd, continuing on until you reach the parking lot for the Natural Bridge. From there, it’s about a 500-metre walk to the lookout point where you will find informative signage about the creation of the Natural Bridge.
The Natural Bridge is one of the best lookout points along the Kalbarri Cliffs. Overlooking the dramatic formation in the Indian Ocean, you have the opportunity to spot resident bottlenose dolphins and migrating whales!
From the Natural Bridge, you can follow the 1.2-kilometre return Bigurda Boardwalk, which takes you to Island Rock. This is another stunning coastal formation which, unlike Natural Bridge, has completely separated from the cliffs.
If you want to spend more time exploring the cliffs, then you can embark on the Birguda Trail. This trail is eight kilometres in total, spanning between Natural Bridge and Eagle Point. Rated a Class 3 trail, a moderate level of fitness is required. There are also some rocky sections, so good shoes are recommended.
You can complete the trail from either direction or only do short sections if you prefer. If you do the full eight-kilometre walk, you can expect it to take between three and five hours. The trail provides exceptional views of the coastline and passes other notable landmarks including Shell House and Grandstand Rock Gorge. Make sure you have someone to pick you up on the other end once you’ve finished walking!
The best time to visit is between the months of June and November. Not only is the weather cooler at this time, making it better for exploring, but these months also coincide with wildflower and whale season!
Between July and November, Kalbarri turns into a spectacle of blooming wildflowers. Along the Coastal Cliffs, you can spot stunning flora like Murchison Magic, Holly Leaved Tailflower, Red Grevillea, and Murchison Rose. From June, thousands of humpback whales migrate to the coast of Kalbarri and are frequently spotted from the Coastal Cliffs!
Whether you embark on the Bigurda Trail or just admire the views from Natural Bridge, a camera is essential. Come near sunrise or sunset for the best lighting and capture some landscapes that will be the envy of all of social media!
Since Natural Bridge is part of Kalbarri National Park, you’ll definitely want to spend more time exploring this expansive region. Going inland to where the Murchison River has carved its route, you can visit the incredible Kalbarri Skywalk, which extends over the gorge at a height of 100 metres! Continue exploring to see even more breathtaking rock formations like the Natural Window, which offers a picture-perfect frame.
If you continue driving south from the Natural Bridge, you’ll find another natural phenomenon — the iconic Pink Lake, also known as Hutt Lagoon. This lake has turned pink as a result of algae living in its waters, transforming it into a major highlight of the Coral Coast.
Even further south is the historic town of Geraldton, where you can learn more about local heritage and enjoy attractions such as the HMAS Sydney II Memorial, the Museum of Geraldton, and the Big Marble.
