Getting to Kalbarri: What You Need to Know
Kalbarri is located about 570 km north of Perth, roughly a 6.5-hour drive. Because of the distance, a true day trip from Perth is a stretch unless you’re ready for a very long haul. Most visitors either road trip over several days or join a Kalbarri Multi-Day Tour, which is by far the most relaxed and rewarding way to explore the Coral Coast. If you’re considering driving yourself by car, check out our Epic Perth to Kalbarri Road Trip Itinerary.
The coastal town of Geraldton, about 1.5 hours south of Kalbarri, is the most practical starting point for a day trip to Kalbarri. If you’d prefer to avoid a long drive, there are flights from Perth to Geraldton that only take about an hour. In Geraldton, you can then rent a car and enjoy the scenic drive to Kalbarri.

Best Time to Visit Kalbarri
Kalbarri is spectacular all year round, but your experience can vary depending on the time of year. July to October is possibly the best time to explore Kalbarri, as it coincides with wildflower season and whale watching season. During these winter and spring months, thousands of wildflowers bloom while migrating whales arrive on the coastline.
Over summer, from November to February, expect hot temperatures around 35°C and highs of up to 50°C in Kalbarri National Park. Some inland hiking trails may be closed during this time, but the cooler oceanfront is perfect for adventures.
During autumn, from March to May, mild temperatures make outdoor exploring a breeze. These months are ideal for hiking the gorges or walking along the coastal cliffs.
The Perfect Kalbarri Day Trip Itinerary

9.30 AM: Kalbarri National Park: Nature’s Window & Z Bend
Upon arriving in Kalbarri, you can skip the main town first and head straight for Kalbarri National Park to avoid the midday heat. Nearby, the Z Bend Lookout offers a dramatic view of the meandering river. From both points you can embark on hikes into the gorge, though these will take up more time from your day. Read our blog covering the 10 Best Hikes and Trails in Kalbarri National Park to decide whether you want to spend more of your trip exploring these trails.
For a bird’s eye view, the Kalbarri Skywalk features two jaw-dropping platforms suspended high above the gorge. While walking along the skywalk, you can learn about the region’s geology and Indigenous heritage through interpretive displays.

1:00 PM: Lunch in Kalbarri Town
After the morning’s adventures, head back into town to refuel on a delicious lunch. With places like Finaly’s Kalbarri, which specialises in seafood, and the Gorges Café, which offers casual dining, you’ll have numerous options to choose from. 2:30 PM: Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs
Once you’re reenergised, it’s time to explore south of town along the exceptional Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs, which also form part of Kalbarri National Park. There are myriad viewpoints along the way, including Island Rock and Natural Bridge, two beautifully sculpted landforms, Eagle Gorge, where you can walk onto a secluded beach, and Red Bluff, one of the best locations for spotting whales!

4 PM: Optional: Swim at Blue Holes
If time and energy allow, make sure to stop by Blue Holes, a protected marine sanctuary perfect for snorkelling or a refreshing dip.
