Kalbarri Town: A Haven For Surfers and Snorkellers

While the small town of Kalbarri is perhaps best known for its proximity to Kalbarri National Park, it’s also home to spectacular attractions you will not want to miss on your journey to the Coral Coast.

Blue Holes

A protected fish habitat area, the Blue Holes are a series of shallow rock pools located just south of town. This natural aquarium is perfect for snorkeling, especially at low tide, with calm, clear waters teeming with over 70 species of finfish. Swim among various sponges and coral, and encounter stunning fish such as raccoon butterflyfish, humbugs, and moon wrasse.

Jacques Point

This left-hand reef break is Kalbarri’s most famous surf spot, attracting skilled surfers from around the globe. Known locally as Jakes Point, it’s a National Surfing Reserve. While it’s recommended that only experienced surfers tackle these waves, you can also enjoy watching them from the shore or paddling out at Jakes Bay instead.

Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs: A Sculpted Masterpiece

Just outside town, the Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs begin. They are a masterpiece millions of years in the making, with dramatic rock faces, hidden beaches, and unique geological formations. We’ve listed the top landmarks below, starting from Kalbarri Town.

Red Bluff

Near Jacques Point, the Red Bluff towers at a height of 100 metres, providing sweeping views of the coast. It’s one of the best locations for whale watching, while the Red Bluff Beach provides a beautiful backdrop as you dip in the water.

Mushroom Rock & Rainbow Valley

Mushroom Rock and Rainbow Valley are two beautiful coastal landmarks located near one another. You can embark on a short three-kilometre loop between the two, admiring the multi-coloured cliffs and sculpted rock formations.

Pot Alley

This narrow inlet carved by the sea is a favourite for its rugged beauty and breathtaking sunsets. While swimming isn’t recommended due to strong currents, it’s perfect for photography, picnics, or simply watching the waves crash beneath the cliffs.

Eagle Gorge

Named for the wedge-tailed eagles that soar here, Eagle Gorge marks one end of the Bigurda Trail. While it makes for an excellent lookout, you can also descend to the beach for some whale watching or to capture photos of the impressively eroded cliff faces.

Natural Bridge & Island Rock Lookout, Kalbarri

Natural Bridge and Island Rock lookout are two of Kalbarri’s most photographed landmarks thanks to their unique beauty. Located near one another, Natural Bridge has remained connected to the cliffs despite centuries of erosion, while Island Rock now stands as an isolated sea stack.

Natural Bridge marks the other end of the Bigurda Trail, an eight-kilometre clifftop hike with panoramic vistas and opportunities for spotting wildlife. You can choose to do a 16-kilometre round trip or go one way between Natural Bridge and Eagle Gorge. In that case, you’ll need a lift at either end, and we provide a Kalbarri shuttle service for hikers.

About 150 km south of Kalbarri, Geraldton is a bustling coastal city that’s a hub for marine adventure and the gateway to the Houtman Abrolhos Islands.

Geraldton Foreshore & Beaches

The heart of the city’s beachfront, the Geraldton and Beresford Foreshores are great for swimming, picnicking, and watching the sunset. With cafes, playgrounds, and calm waters, it’s perfect for families or anyone looking to unwind by the coast.

Beaches like St. George’s, Tarcoola, and Sunset Beach offer excellent conditions for surfing, bodyboarding, or fishing. Geraldton is also a top spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing thanks to consistent offshore breezes, with Point Moore offering prime conditions.
