The Ultimate Kalbarri National Park & Coastal Cliffs Adventure

If you’re craving a spectacular outdoor adventure that combines dramatic coastal views with stunning landscapes, look no further than Kalbarri. Nestled on Western Australia’s rugged mid-west coast, Kalbarri offers the perfect blend of awe-inspiring seascapes and the rugged beauty of the hinterland.

Kalbarri National Park incorporates both the lower inland forged by the Murchison River and the seaside cliffs formed by the battering of the waves. Visiting here is the ultimate outdoor experience for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and photographers alike, which is why D’Guy Journeys offers numerous Kalbarri Trips! We’ve created this guide on how to have the ultimate Kalbarri National Park and Coastal Cliffs adventure. If you have any questions as you read, don’t hesitate to contact us

Begin Your Adventure in Kalbarri National Park

Just a short drive from Kalbarri town, the inland section of Kalbarri National Park surrounds the Murchison River, which has cut a breathtaking gorge through the landscape. There are few better ways to kick off your Kalbarri adventure than by catching the sunrise at Nature’s Window. This natural rock arch perfectly frames the expansive vistas and is utterly magical in the early golden hours. For tips on how to capture it, read our Photography Lover’s Guide to Western Australia’s Coral Coast.

If you’re feeling adventurous, descend into the gorge from Nature’s Window and embark on the Loop Trail. This nine-kilometre trail follows the path of the Murchison River, immersing you in the rocky terrain. Because of how hot the gorge can get, especially in summer, this trail is best done in the morning.

After your time at Nature’s Window, head over to the Z Bend Lookout for another unique perspective of the gorge. Here, you can see how the river has sharply carved its path through the land. There is also another six-kilometre trail you can take here called the Four Ways Trail. Check out our blog about the 10 Best Hikes and Trails in Kalbarri National Park for more details.

While at the park, you absolutely cannot miss the Kalbarri Skywalk. This cantilevered viewing platform extends over the edge of the Murchison Gorge, providing panoramic views that are both exhilarating and humbling. For a truly exceptional experience, return in the evening for our Kalbarri Stargazing Tour! The Skywalk offers the ultimate location from which to admire the Milky Way.

Journey to the Spectacular Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs

After a thrilling inland experience, head through Kalbarri town towards the coastline, where the red sandstone cliffs meet the sparkling Indian Ocean. All along the Kalbarri Coastal Cliffs, you’ll find jaw-dropping formations to admire.

At the southern end of the cliffs, the Natural Bridge and Island Rock provide some of the most dramatic examples of the forces of the ocean. Waves have carved an arch through the Natural Bridge, while the Island Rock has been progressively eroded and now stands as a solitary sea stack.

Continuing along the coastline, you’ll find places like Eagle Gorge, where wedge-tailed eagles soar, and Pot Alley, where you can walk onto the beach for an excellent sunset viewing. At the end of the Coastal Cliffs is Red Bluff, a prime viewing spot for migrating whales!

While you can drive to all of these sites along the Coastal Cliffs, you can also choose to embark on the scenic Bigurda Trail. Spanning eight kilometres between Natural Bridge and Eagle Gorge, you’ll need to be picked up on the other end. Or, you can do a round-trip walk and take the distance up to 16 kilometres. Just make sure to budget for time!

Planning Your Kalbarri Adventure: Tips for a Memorable Trip

  • Make an early start: To make the most of your time here and for the best light and cooler temperatures, begin your explorations early to fit in as much as possible.
  • Gear up: Trail shoes or sturdy hiking boots are a must for the rugged terrain. Sun protection, plenty of water, and a hat will keep you safe and comfortable.
  • Respect the environment: Stay on marked paths and take all rubbish with you to help preserve Kalbarri’s ecosystems.
  • Wildlife watching: Early mornings and late afternoons are best for spotting native animals, including kangaroos, emus, and a wide variety of birds.
